At A Thousand Women, our journey began with a simple but eye-opening discovery that shook us to the core. After a deep reflection and an important conversation within our team, we realized that too many young girls in Africa are struggling with the bare minimum to thrive. They face challenges we often overlook in our daily lives—challenges that no child should have to endure.

One of the moments that sparked our mission happened during a conversation with a principal at a local school in Nigeria. As we spoke about the struggles of the children in the school, we learned something that deeply moved us: Many girls were missing school because they couldn’t afford basic sanitary products like pads. When these girls had their menstruation, they simply couldn’t attend school, as they were too embarrassed to show up without the necessary sanitary supplies. This meant that these girls were falling behind in their education—something no child should ever have to experience.

This was a pivotal moment for us. It made us realize that the fight for women’s empowerment starts with the basics—ensuring that every girl has access to education, resources, and the support she needs to reach her full potential. This discovery led us to take action.

And so, A Thousand Women was born.

We are driven by the need to provide support to girls who face these obstacles. Through advocacy, education, community support, and mental well-being programs, we aim to bridge the gap and make sure that no girl is left behind. We are committed to providing young girls in Africa with the tools, resources, and emotional support they need to overcome these challenges and become leaders of tomorrow.
